Private Pilot Requirements

Part 61.103 through 61.117 Flight experience required to become a private pilot

  • 40 hours of flight time to include:
  • Of those 40 hours, a minimum of 20 must be with an instructor, and a minimum of 10 hours must be solo

  • 3 hours of cross country time
  • 3 hours of night time which include:
  • --One night cross-country over 100nm total distance
    --10 takeoffs, and 10 landings to a full stop
  • 3 hours simulated instrument time
  • 3 hours within 60 days of the checkride for preparation
  • of the 10 solo hours, 5 must be cross country
  • of the 5 solo cross-country hours, one must be 150nm total distance, with landings at 3+ airports, and one segment of the flight must be 50+nm between airports
  • 3 solo takeoffs and landings to a full stop at a towered airport
